Judith's CLASPER & CROSS Families

My CLASPER family connection is centred in the town of Dunston on Tyne which is in the Parish of Whickham, to the west of Gateshead, Co Durham (now Tyne & Wear).

My GGGrandfather was Thomas CLASPER, who was born in Dunston in 1834, son of Robert CLASPER & his second wife, Mary.

Thomas was half brother to the famous CLASPER brothers who were champion Oarsmen on the River Tyne, notably Henry (Harry) CLASPER who was not just a champion Oarsman but a brilliant boatbuilder & designer.

Thomas CLASPER m. Elizabeth SINCLAIR in Newcastle on Tyne in 1855 and they had ten children, the eldest Mary Ann CLASPER, b 1857 in Dunston, being my GGrandmother.

My GGrandmother Mary Ann CLASPER, married Henry CROSS at Whickham Parish Church in 1873, Henry CROSS was born in Southam, Warwickshire in 1854.

Henry & Mary Ann had seven children:

Elizabeth CROSS, b. 1878 (My Grandmother)

George CROSS, b. 1880

Henry CROSS, b. 1888

Fanny CROSS, b. 1890

Clara CROSS, b. 1893

Mary Ann CROSS, b. 1896

My Grandmother Elizabeth CROSS, married William Henry AMOS, at Whickham Parish Church, William Henry AMOS was born in Hythe, Kent in 1877.

Mary Ann CROSS, youngest child of Henry & Mary Ann CROSS, married Francis Victor Kendall AMOS, b. 1888 in Hythe, Kent, half brother of William Henry AMOS, See Amos Page Francis & Mary Ann married in Liverpool in 1919 and emigrated to the USA. Contact Dawn AMOS for more information.
